Fall is the perfect season to spruce up your porch and prepare for the cooler months. Here are our 3 top ways to give your home’s outdoor patio an update:
Cleaning outdoor furniture is one of the quickest ways to boost your porch or deck’s appearance. Clean wood and wicker with a mild, oil-based soap and warm water mixture. Commercial wood cleaners can be effective, but test them in an inconspicuous spot to see if you need to dilute them first.
Oxidation is the most common problem with aluminum furniture. A 1:1 solution of white vinegar and water will remove a lot of imperfections. Then, remove scuff marks with a soft cloth dampened with a non-abrasive cleanser. Have wrought-iron pieces? Think about having them sandblasted or powder coated.
Resin and plastic furniture need only a mild cleanser, such as automatic dishwasher detergent, containing a mild bleaching agent. A simple solution to restore shine? WD-40! Just spray and wipe clean with a dry cloth.
For glass tabletops, a quick wash with dish detergent and a non-abrasive sponge will do.
As for your cushions, most outdoor materials can be cleaned with basic ingredients like dish soap, borax and warm water. Spray the mixture on the cushions, wait about 15 minutes and then, use the high setting on your garden hose to thoroughly remove the cleaning solution and dirt. For an instant revival, don’t forget to add some new throw pillows in bright colors and prints!
It’s always a good idea to visually inspect your outdoor floors once a year to ensure the structure remains in safe condition.
Different surfaces require different cleaning solutions. Stone pavers or flagstone look great after a high-powered pressure wash. Wood decks, however, require a different approach. Assuming it doesn’t need to be retreated first, simply rinse the deck off with a garden hose. If you have a composite or vinyl deck, plain soap and water is all you need.
For lightly soiled concrete patios, use a cleanser and stiff non-metallic brush. You can also use a water/bleach mix, and a 50/50 vinegar and water mixture is a great natural cleaner. If the concrete is heavily stained or mildewed, a pressure washer should do the trick. To protect it from future stains, apply a concrete sealer.
